If I asked you what is the main ingredient in the success of a web page, what would you answer me? I know there are thousands of factors that can help you succeed, but web security is one of those we can never turn our back on. So today we focus on a topic for which you do not stop asking us, we explain how to install WordPress ReCaptcha.
A reCAPTCHA system in WordPress will help you to reinforce your website a little more, preventing bots from crushing all your work with automated actions that are difficult to tackle manually. Do we see how to insert a CAPTCHA in WordPress?
How to install WordPress Recaptcha?
Inserting reCAPTCHA in WordPress is a very simple process, in fact, it will not take more than ten minutes. You simply have to follow these two steps:
- Register your website in Google reCAPTCHA
- Connect Google reCAPTCHA with WordPress
Below I will explain in more detail what to do in each of these steps. You will see that it is much easier than you think. Also, by integrating Google reCAPTCHA through a plugin, you avoid having to touch the code of your website.

Important: Before installing a reCAPTCHA in WordPress (or making any other changes to your page) check that you have a backup available. So you make sure that if something goes wrong you can go back in just a couple of minutes. Remember that in all our web hosting and SSD hosting plans we have two copies a day, so if you have your website with us, you know that you are safe.
1. Get the Google API key reCAPTCHA
Although reCAPTCHA is a free service, it is necessary to register your website with Google to provide you with the authorization code that you will need later to install reCAPTCHA in WordPress.
To do this, access Google reCAPTCHA and, in the upper right corner, click on the “Admin Console” button. Remember to register with the email address you use for all Google services (Analytics, Ads, Search Console), so you have everything unified in the same account.
Now register your website. For this, it is necessary that you establish a tag name (for example, reCAPTCHA YourDomain.com), choose the version to use and add the domain of your website to complete the registration. Finally, click on “Send”.

What version or type of Google reCAPTCHA do I select?
In the form, you will see that you have two options, reCAPTCHA v3 and reCAPTCHA v2. Although here you have all the information, I summarize what each of them consists of:
- reCAPTCHA v3: It is the most recent version and allows us to identify if the user is real or not without any interaction on his part. This is a JavaScript code that returns a score based on user behavior.
- reCAPTCHA v2: If you select this option, you will see that it automatically returns three alternatives:
Box I am not a robot: Perhaps it is the most used. It simply asks the user to check the I am not a robot box to verify that it is real. Sometimes, it can challenge the user to select some images that contain a traffic light, car, crosswalk … It sounds to you, right?
Invisible reCAPTCHA badge: In this case, the user does not need to take any action, except that Google suspects that it may indeed be a bot.
reCAPTCHA for Android: It is a version developed specifically for Android applications.
Google automatically provides you with two keys that are necessary to install reCAPTCHA in WordPress (Website key and Secret key). In fact, a screen like the one shown below will be displayed.
2. Install a reCAPTCHA plugin in WordPress
Now we have to connect Google reCAPTCHA with WordPress. For this, in the official WordPress repository, you have a lot of options. In this example, I am going to use reCaptcha by BestWebSoft.
Access your WordPress installation and, in the side menu, click on “Plugins” – “Add new”. In the search engine type reCaptcha by BestWebSoft and the installation process begins.
After installing and activating it, a new section will be created in the WordPress menu: reCAPTCHA. Click on it and open the “Settings” window. Now enter the keys we obtained on the Google page reCAPTCHA.
Set the plugin settings. Where do you want the reCAPTCHA (login form, registration, comments, password reset) to be displayed? Do you want to hide it for a WordPress user or role?
If you want to insert the reCAPTCHA informs that you have created with plugins, such as Mailchimp for WordPress, WooCommerce payment form or NinjaForms, you need to upgrade your plan to the Pro subscription.
Why implement a CAPTCHA system?
The simplest answer: for security.
By installing a CAPTCHA system in WordPress you will be adding an extra layer of security to your website that will help you deal with spam problems. You will prevent bots from filling your website with malicious content or simply advertising that can affect the operation of your site.
Some of the parts of your website in which a CAPTCHA can be very effective are:
- Registration Form
- Access, log in or login form
- Password regeneration
- Subscription form
- Comments section
You can even add a CAPTCHA to protect the WordPress login. It is a way to discourage bots from trying to access the administration panel of your website by brute force.
